Wai Yan Philip Chiu - Biography#

Philip Chiu is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Professor of Robotic Surgery, Professor of Division of Upper GI and Metabolic Surgery, Director of Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center, Director of Endoscopy Center, Institute of Digestive Disease of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the Steering Committee of Health and Medical Innovation Development of the Health Bureau of HKSAR Government, a member of Hospital Authority Board, and served as the President of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA) from 2021-2023.

Professor Chiu graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994 with two scholarships. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (General Surgery), Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2001, and received his Doctor of Medicine from CUHK in 2009.

Throughout his career, Professor Chiu has achieved numerous milestones that underscore his expertise and innovation in the field. Notably, he was the first in Hong Kong to perform Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) for early gastric cancer in 2004 and the first to conduct Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in 2010. His pioneering work in robotic surgery includes performing the world’s first robotic gastric ESD in 2011 and the world’s first robotic colorectal ESD in 2020.

Recognizing the immense potential of interdisciplinary collaboration, Professor Chiu established the Chow Yuk Ho Technology Centre for Innovative Medicine in 2014, aimed at fostering collaboration between clinicians and engineers to drive innovation in medical technology. This initiative led to the founding of the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC) in 2019, which received substantial funding under InnoHK’s research cluster focusing on artificial intelligence and robotics. The MRC collaborates with leading institutions, including Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, and Johns Hopkins University, to advance research and development in robotic platforms across micro to nano scales.

He currently serves as a co-editor of Endoscopy, and as a Specialty Chief Editor (Endoscopy) of Frontiers in Gastroenterology. Having published near 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 6 book chapters, he has been invited as a speaker at over 380 international / national scientific meetings and conferences.
