Lord Martin Rees awarded Royal Society’s Copley Medal#
Astronomer Royal, Professor Martin Rees, Lord Rees of Ludlow, OM FRS MAE, has been awarded the Royal Society’s oldest and most prestigious award.

The Royal Society
has announced that the Copley Medal 2023 is awarded to internationally renowned cosmologist and astrophysicist Lord Martin Rees “for being arguably the most distinguished theoretical astrophysicist of his generation, responsible for numerous and varied conceptual breakthroughs, with influence spreading far beyond the specialist academic community.”
First awarded in 1731, the Copley Medal is the most prestigious award of the Royal Society, bestowed “for sustained, outstanding achievements in any field of science.” Previous winners include Sydney Brenner, Paul Nurse, Robert May, and Roger Penrose.
Professor Martin Rees is a member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences section of Academia Europaea since 1989.
