Elżbieta Maria Witkowska-Zaremba - Biography#

Having graduated in musicology and classical philology from Warsaw University, Elżbieta Witkowska-Zaremba (b. 1946) has worked for the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1974, first as research assistant, then senior researcher and, since July 2007, Director of the Institute of Art. (The Institute has both a research and a doctoral teaching programme.) She obtained her Ph.D. in 1979, her Dr. Habil. degree in 1991. She was made a full professor in 2001.

Witkowska's main area of research is Latin music theory of the 14th-16th centuries, which has included producing critical editions of music treatises , among others Musica speculativa (1323) by Johannes de Muris and two anonymous organ treatises from the early 15th century.

During the years 1993-1997 she led an international project covering musical notation in Polish sources from the 11th- 16th centuries, culminating in a dual publication of the results in Polish and in English.

A professor since 2001, she has been responsible for research into the history of music conducted at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Since 2003 she has been chief editor of the quarterly “Muzyka” published by the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences.
