Nigel Vincent - Biography#

Nigel Vincent studied at the University of Cambridge and has held academic posts at the Universities of London (Birkbeck College), Lancaster, Hull and Cambridge, before becoming Mont Follick Professor of Comparative Philology, at the University of Manchester (1987-2011); he is now Professor Emeritus of General & Romance Linguistics at Manchester. He was an Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury (NZ) in 2000 and has held visiting posts at the Universities of Copenhagen, Pavia and Rome.

Besides publishing, he has been very active in serving the discipline by organizing conferences, giving keynote lectures, editing volumes, editing the Journal of Linguistics for ten years and supervising postgraduates (several of whom have gone on to become major scholars).

He served as President of the Philological Society and of the International Society for Historical Linguistics. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2006 and is currently the Academy’s Vice-President for Research and HE Policy. This latter post demonstrates his activities going beyond the discipline of linguistics, as shown also by the fact that in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise he was chair of Main Panel M, which covered Modern Languages, Celtic Studies, Linguistics and English Language & Literature.
