Sergiy Shyp - Biography#
Sergiy Shyp was born in 1950 in Odesa, then USSR, today Ukraine. In 1973, he graduated in music theory and history from the Odesa State Conservatory, and received his PhD ("candidate") in musicology in 1982 from the Academy of Musicology, Folklore and Ethnology in Kyiv. In 2002, he was awarded the degree of Doctor in musicology (equals German habilitation and simila post-doctoral degress) from the Tchaikovsky Music Academy in Kyiv.
Since 1982 and 1983, respectively, he has held posts both at the Odesa Music Academy and at its National Pedagogical University, first as a lecturer and adjunct professor, and since 2002, as a full professor for musicology. At the National Pedagogical University, he was the head of its Department of Music Theory and History from 2002 to 2005. Since 2006, he has been the head of the Department for Music and Choreography.
In addition, he acted at the Director of Cultural Affais at the German Cultural Center "Bayerisches Haus" in Odesa from 1994-1999, and was honoured with a one-year professorship at the Tianjin Music Conservatory in China in 2005/06.
From 1987 to 2002, he served as the co-chair of the Odesa branch of the Ukrainian Composers Union.
Sergiy Shyp has published extensively, also in international contexts, and has been invited to speak at numerous conferences around the globe. His scholarly interests are extremely broad, with main foci on the theoretization of musical meaning (semiotics, hermeneutics) and form, on styles of contemporary art music, and the music culture in Odessa and Ukraine.
