Fangli Qiao - Biography#
Prof. Fangli Qiao is recognized by United Nations as a global leader on ocean science and one of the global leaders on ocean and climate model development, and leading a top research team on ocean model development in China. He is member of the Decade Advisory Board and Executive Planning Group of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, co-editor-in-chief of Ocean Modelling, Chair Professor of physical oceanography and the Deputy Director General of the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of Ministry of Natural Resources of China.
Prof. Qiao received his B.S. (1988), M.S. (1991) and PhD (2003) from Ocean University of China, First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and Institute of Oceanology of Chinese Academy of Science (IOCAS) respectively, all in physical oceanography. He worked at the National Institute of Marine Environments of Japan for 7 months as Frontier Fellowship, and at Princeton University of USA for 9 months as Visiting Scholar.
He has been working at FIO since 1991, and was promoted as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in 1993, 1995 and 1997 respectively, all breaking the rules of age and working period due to his professional excellence. He was promoted as the Deputy Director General of FIO taking charge of science and technology and international cooperation. FIO is an non-profit national institute playing leading role on ocean science and shouldering a major ocean mission in China.
Prof. Qiao is the Co-chair of UNESCO/IOC/WESTPAC, SSG member of WCRP/ CLIVAR and Governing Council member of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES). He has been acting as the Founding Director of UNESCO/IOC Regional Training and Research Center on Ocean Dynamics and Climate since 2011 and DCC-OCC of UN Ocean Decade since 2022. He received numerous academic awards including the Wooster Award of PICES, National Innovation Awards of China, etc. He has more than 400 publications on peer-review scientific journals. He is the Elsevier highly-cited Chinese Researcher in 2021.
