Martine Nida-Rümelin - Biography#


Martine Nida-Rümelin, born 1957, studied philosophy, mathematics, psychology and political sciences at the University of Munich. She acquired the PhD in 1988 (supervised by Wolfgang Stegmüller) and the habilitation in 1996. During a stay of 6 months in the USA in 1991 she was tutored by R. M. Chisholm and T. Burge. Since 1999 she is full professor of philosophy at the University of Fribourg. She is fluent and teaches in French, German, English, Italian, and Spanish.

She published two monographs in German and 69 papers, many of them in top journals or as invited contributions to volumes by outstanding academic publishers. A monograph presenting her overall view on conscious subjects is under contract with OUP. A monograph elaborating philosophical fundamentals for Cognitive Science is under contract with MIT Press.

In 1994 she received the Wolfgang-Stegmüller-Preis from the Gesellschaft für Analytische Philosophie for her dissertation. In 2019 she received the Jean-Nicod-Prize awarded by the CNRS for philosophical work related to cognition. Since 2012 she was invited as keynote speaker in several major philosophical events in Europe and North America.

She directed 8 research projects with a funding sum of ca. 3,5 Million Swiss Francs. She was involved as co-director of the Prodoc (doctoral school in French-speaking Switzerland) from 2007-2010, and she directed the doctoral school of philosophy within the program CUSO (Conférence Universitaire dela Suisse Occidentale) from 2009-2019. She has been supervisor of doctoral or postdoctoral work of 26 researchers from many countries. She widely served the international philosophical community as reviewer and as member of editorial boards; she served the European philosophical community as member of evaluation or selection committees in various countries. From 2017-2020 she was member of the local research commission at the University of Fribourg which pre-selects applications from all disciplines for funding by the SNF.
