Martina Muckenthaler - Biography#
Prof. Dr. Martina Muckenthaler is Head of Molecular Medicine at the Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology, Immunology and Pulmonology at the Heidelberg University Hospital as well as a group leader within the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit (MMPU) between the University of Heidelberg and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Her doctorate at the Universities of Oxford (UK) and Frankfurt (Germany), as well as her time as a postdoc and staff scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) completed her training as a molecular biologist. Her long-term research interests focus on regulatory mechanisms for maintaining iron homeostasis and their disruption in red blood cell diseases. The current work of Prof. Muckenthaler significantly contributes to our understanding of regulatory mechanisms maintaining iron homeostasis as well as to the pathological consequences of iron overload and iron deficiency. She is the current President of the International Bioiron Society and also a member of the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). She is involved in many renowned, collaborative national and international research programs and serves several national and international academic societies and bodies.
