Sharon Macdonald - Biography#

Sharon Macdonald is Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Social Anthropology at the Humboldt University, Berlin, where she directs the transdisciplinary Hermann von Helmholtz Centre for Cultural Techniques and is co-founder and co-director of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg/ Centre for Advanced Study, inherit. heritage in transformation. Educated at the University of Oxford, she is a Research Associate of the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford, holds Honorary Professorships at the Universities of Aberdeen and York and has been a Visiting Professor at various universities in China, including Peking and Tsinghua. She has successfully established and run a range of significant research projects, funded, among others, by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK), the European Union (Horizon programme), the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the Leverhulme Trust (UK), the Volkswagen Foundation and the Wellcome Foundation. She is internationally recognised for her work on questions of culture, museums and heritage, about which she has written widely, with many of her books and articles highly cited and her work having been translated into 10 languages. She has held significant advisory roles, including as Deputy Chair of the Academic Committee of the House of European History.
