Gilles Laurent - Curriculum Vitae#

After studying veterinary medicine and neuroethology in Toulouse (France), Gilles Laurent did a postdoc at the University of Cambridge (UK), where he was a Locke Research Fellow of the Royal Society and Research Fellow at Downing College.

In 1990, he joined the faculty of the Biology department at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena CA (USA) and the new Computation and Neural Systems Graduate program. In 2009, he moved to Frankfurt aM (Germany), as a director at the Max Planck Institute of Brain Research. He did sabbaticals at Stanford University (Palo Alto CA, USA) in 2002 and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris in 2008.

His scientific interests lie at the interfaces of cellular, systems and computational neuroscience. His laboratory has worked on a variety of animals (insects, cuttlefish, reptiles, mammals) and systems (motor, visual, olfactory). His research is now focused on sleep, cortex and hippocampus function and evolution, and visual perception.

He has published over 90 research papers, about 30 reviews and book chapters.

He has mentored a number of young and prominent scientists now with faculty positions at Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, University of Chicago, FMI Basel, NIH, Janelia HHMI Research Campus among others.
