Among Professor Leszek Kaczmarek most important scientific discoveries are the role of c-Myc protein in control of the cell cycle, the role of gene expression in mammalian learning, neuronal apoptosis in the adult brain, the role of matrix metalloproteinases in neuronal plasticity, learning and memory, and the role of cyclin D2 in adult brain neurogenesis. He has received several awards for his research achievements, including the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science (2000), the most prestigious science award in Poland.
