Celso Grebogi - Biography#

Professor Grebogi assumed the Sixth Century Chair in Nonlinear and Complex Systems at King’s College, University of Aberdeen, in 2005, where he embarked on a hiring programme (13 new academics) to build his nonlinear and complex systems group and, indirectly, to reshape the Department of Physics at Aberdeen. His group in complex systems and systems biology became one of the leading in UK, and it has led Prof. Grebogi to launch a new Institute, the Institute for Complex Systems and Mathematical Biology, in 2009. He is also an External Scientific Member (Mitglied - Director's level) of the Max-Planck-Society since 1998. He was the co-founder of the Aberdeen-Lanzhou-Tempe Joint Research Centre in 2012, whose research work concentrates in the new interdisciplinary field that he and his co-workers have developed: Relativistic Quantum Chaos.

Professor Grebogi, since the outset of his career, has been taking up new and innovative research areas that the traditional disciplines are not in the position to accommodate or deal with adequately, let them be in the natural sciences, life sciences, socials sciences, humanities or technology. These interdisciplinary research areas often do not fit into a traditional university organisation, and they require funds for personnel, facilities than those typical available. Prof. Grebogi, with the help of administrators initially at the University of Maryland, then at the University of Sao Paulo, and now at the University of Aberdeen, have created organisational structures that foster and stimulate the cross-disciplinary work on problems dealing with topics of considerable practical importance or those directly connected with technical use and application. The multidisciplinary and excellence of the research carried out by his group and collaborators consistently have been attracting the all important project grants, and a stream of postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visitors coming from different parts of the world.
