José Manuel Fernández-Real - Biography#

Professor José Manuel Fernández-Real (MD, PhD) is an endocrinologist and a research scientist at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute Dr. Josep Trueta.

He has carried out an intense research task of more than 30 years of experience in the study of the pathophysiology of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and their complications. His main research lines are centred on the study of the link between memory, microbiota and obesity, biology of adipose tissue, microRNAs, iron as a modulator of inflammation to metabolic pathology and the relationship among insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity and how they constitute chronic low-grade inflammatory conditions among others.

He has published more than 550 articles indexed in PubMed (273 as corresponding author, 108 of which as first author), with an H-index of 99 (Google Scholar), 74 (WOS), 80 (Scopus), and >40,000 citations (Google Scholar), including publications in high impact journals of the first decile, for example: Nature Medicine, Gut, Cell Metabolism, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Diabetes Care, Nature Reviews in Endocrinology, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communications, Hepatology, Microbiome, The ISME Journal, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Cell Reports, Diabetologia, among others.

He is among the 40 most cited authors in the world in the field of Endocrinology (Google Scholar) and in the top 1% (specifically in the top 0.6%) of most cited authors in all scientific fields (Stanford University).

He is the Principal Investigator of more than 30 National and International Projects and former member of the Editorial Board of Diabetes Care and Clinical Chemistry, among others. He is also applicant /co-applicant of 11 patents and the director of 17 doctoral theses.

He was the coordinator of the European ThinkGut project (Horizon 2020, POCTEFA, 2020-2022). Since 2019, he has been involved in 3 other European projects: one from the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), one from HDHL-JPI, and another from the Innovative Training Network of excellence. He has also intervened as head of Work packages in the European project of the VIIth FLORINASH framework program (finished in 2015) and in the Horizon 2020 PEPPER project (finished in 2020).

He has created and he is the lead of the research group, “Nutrition, Eumetabolism and Health”, a consolidated group recognized by the Generalitat of Catalonia (2021 SGR 01263) and belongs to the CIBERobn (CIBER Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition) since its foundation.
