Antonio Echavarren - Biography#
Antonio M. Echavarren received his PhD at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM, 1982) and after a postdoctoral stay in Boston College, he joined the UAM as an Assistant Professor. Following a two-years period as a NATO-fellow at Colorado State University, he joined the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the CSIC in Madrid. In 1992, he returned to the UAM as a Professor of Organic Chemistry and in 2004 he moved to Tarragona as a Group Leader at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). Since 2004, he is also Professor of Research of the CSIC.
In 2013, Prof. Echavarren got a first ERC Advanced Grant (CATGOLD) to study fundamental aspects and applications of gold catalysis and in 2019 he got another ERC Advanced Grant (FOLDMETCAT) to develop the concept of bioinspired catalytic metalofoldamers. In 2014 he was the President of the 49th EUCHEM Conference on Stereochemistry (Bürgenstock conference). Among others, Prof. Echavarren is a member of the Advisory Board of Org. & Biomol. Chem., Chem. Soc. Rev., Adv. Synt. Catal., ChemCatChem, member of the Editorial Board and Chem.-Eur. J., and has been Associate Editor of Chem. Comm. (2011-2020). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, has been Secretary General of the RSEQ (1999 - 2004), President of the Catalan Section of the RSEQ (2012 - 2017) and currently he is President of the RSEQ (2018 - present). Prof. Echavarren has been Vice-Director for Academic Affairs of ICIQ (2009 - 2020) and is now Scientific Director of the Severo Ochoa program (Excellence Accreditation, 2020 - 2023).
Prof. Echavarren has supervised 56 PhD students, 45 Master students, and 63 postdoctoral associates. Currently, he supervises a group of 15 PhD, 6 postdoctoral associates, and 2 Master students. He is the author of more than 295 scientific publications (26 in J. Am. Chem. Soc. / 41 in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.).
