• Since 1972 employed at the Institute of Greek and Latin Medieval Philology, University of Copenhagen, and it sucessor institutes (Institute for Greek and Latin 1992-2004, Saxo Institute 2004-). Head of department 1982-86 and 1989-99.
  
• Fellow of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters since 1989.
  
• Since 1966 editor for Corpus Philosophorum Danicorum Medii Aevi. Editor-in-chief since 1982. Editor-in-chief of the Buridan Society's edition of Buridan's Summulae. Editor of Cahiers de l'Institut du moyen-âge grec et latin since 1982. On the advisory board of several journals.
  
• Since 2009 leader of Centre for the Aristotelian Tradition at the Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen. Since 2013 participant in the project Representation and Reality directed by Christina Thomsen Thörnqvist, Gothenburg.
  
• Member of several learned societies. 1992-2000 on the board of Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale (president of the society's commission for the trivium 1982-2012), Member of the Union Académique Internationale’s Commission for Aristoteles Latinus (2003–).
  
• Participation in Research Networks: Chairman of Nordic Network for Graduate Studies in Greek & Latin (1994-1998). Member of the steering committees of the ESF network Early Modern Thought 1999-2001, several Nordic networks, most recently The Aristotelian Tradition: The Reception of Aristotle's works during the Middle Ages (2009-2011, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond), Project Sophismata (based in Geneva, funded by the Swiss National Foundation for the Humanities, 2001-2004), Aristotle’s Categories in the Byzantine, Arabic and Latin traditions (2006-2008, based in Sydney, funded by the Australian Research Council).
  
• Ebbesen has organized numerous international conferences on medieval philosophy. For decades, he has had a key role in securing the perpetuation of the biennial European Symposia on Medieval Logic and Semantics.
