• Born in Ontario, Canada (1956).
  
• Secondary school in Belgium and the Netherlands (1968-1974).
  
• Nursing trainee at Academic hospital Amsterdam (1974-1976).
  
• Studied psychology at Free University Amsterdam and University of Toronto (1976-1985). Worked during this period as a teaching and research assistant in Toronto and the Dutch Parliament.
  
• Ph. D. at Free University Amsterdam (defended in 1990).
  
• Worked in different Dutch academic institutions from 1990. Part-time employment between 1990 and 2002 in connection with childrearing responsibilities.
  
• Was nominated as a member of the first High Level Group of seven scientific advisers of the European Commission in the newly installed framework of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (2015)
