Espen Bjertness - Biography#


Espen Bjertness is professor of epidemiology at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oslo, Norway, since 1995. He holds an Honorary Doctoral Degree at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, and received visiting professorships at Tibet University, China. He has led projects in capacity building in research and higher education in universities in low-income and conflict countries for 30 years, often in cooperation with health ministries. Countries include Palestine, Myanmar, Tibet (China), and North Korea. Espen Bjertness has initiated and participated in several Lancet commissions, including on health conditions in Palestine, the world's indigenous populations, and global governance for health. Research interests include health in low-income- and conflict countries, global health, and health injustice. Bjertness has published more than 200 articles (PubMed), supervised more than 35 PhD students and several master students. He is listed as World's Top 2% Scientists since 2020 based on Stanford and Elsevier Data. Bjertness is teaching community medicine, public health, global health at the University of Oslo, and in low-income and conflict countries.
