Bakke has a distinguished career in reconstructing past climates and environments, pioneering new methods for estimating glacier size, precipitation, atmospheric patterns. He has led field work in some of the most inaccessible areas on Earth, encompassing both hemispheres and the Himalayas.
Bakke is also a pioneer in modernising Earth Science teaching and addressing societal issues and societal oriented practise into the curriculum and is Director of a National Centre of Excellence in higher education, aimed at the comprehensive modernisation of how earth science is taught in Norway (iEarth).
