Alfonso Araque#
Short laudatio by Alexei Verkhratsky#
Prof. Alfonso Araque is one of the most renown young Spanish neuroscientists. The central theme of Alfonso Araque research is the specific signalling between neurons and neuroglia. He was the first to introduce the concert of tripartite synapse into modern neuroscience (Araque A., Parpura V., Sanzgiri R.P., Haydon P.G. 1999. Tripartite synapses: glia, the unacknowledged partner. Trends Neurosci. 22, 208-215.) Subsequently he continued to work in the field on neuronal-glial signalling and made several seminal discoveries, in particular he demonstrated the role of endocannabionoids in neuronal-astrolgial signalling (Navarrete M., Araque A. 2008. Endocannabinoids mediate neuron-astrocyte communication. Neuron. 57, 883-893.) and discovered astroglia-dependent plasticity in hippocampal synapses (Perea G., Araque A. 2007. Astrocytes potentiate transmitter release at single hippocampal synapses. Science. 317, 1083-1086.)
Alfonso Araque's work provided important contribution for the novel view that the brain should no longer be regarded solely as a neuronal network, but instead as a circuit of interactive neuron and glial cell networks.
Alfonso Araque is authors of 88 publications (including those in the most prestigious journals such as Nature, Science and Neuron), an active member of the Spanish Society for Neuroscienes (treasurer) and is the member of Counsel of Instituto Cajal. His works were cited > 2400 times, which, for his age, is very high.
