Alvar Agusti - Biography#
Dr Alvar Agusti received his MD (1979) and PhD (1985) degrees from University of Barcelona. He trained in respiratory medicine at this same hospital (1980-84) and served as a visiting Fogarty Scholar (NIH) at the University of Chicago, US (1989-91). He has been Director of the Pulmonary Division in Hospital Son Dureta (Palma Mallorca, Spain) from 1991 until 2009 and Director of the Respiratory Institute at Hospital Clinic (Barcelona, Spain) from 2009 until 2021. He currently is full Professor of Medicine (tenure) at the University of Barcelona and Chair of the Board of Directors and member of the Scientific Committee of Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). He has been the founder and first Director (2003-2011) of the National Spanish Network of Excellence in Respiratory Research (CIBERES). He has been elected full member to two National Academies of Medicine, both in Mallorca and Barcelona, is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (UK) and an honorary member of the Spanish (SEPAR) and European (ERS) respiratory societies.
