Mark d’Inverno - Biography#


Since 2001 Professor d’Inverno has held senior management roles leading the academic development of Goldsmiths College, University of London. He led a significant improvement in World University QS rankings for Goldsmiths, quadrupled income from Knowledge Transfer, established four research themes across Goldsmiths to support interdisciplinary research and established a new company formation scheme. As Pro-Warden International he was able to support the growth of international students by over 50% in four years. He also developed a range of international agendas including staffing, distance learning and other TNE initiatives. He has also led a range of funded interdisciplinary research projects at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence with creativity, the creative and performing arts, design and education. Including (as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator): EPSRC, AHRC, HEFCE and EU (totalling many millions of pounds). He was Scientific Coordinator for the project PRAISE (Practice and Performance Inspiring Social Education) which was awarded the highest “excellent” rating in 2016 in the final written report to the EU, 2012-2016. He has been invited to chair and participate in significant research committees for, for example, the Hong Kong University Grants Committee, UK Research and Innovation, the European Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. He has supervised twelve PhD candidates to successful completion. Professor d’Inverno has published three co-authored books, two edited books, twenty-nine book chapters, twenty-seven refereed journal papers and over sixty peer reviewed conference presentations. Professor d’Inverno’s Public Engagement appearances include BBC TV, BBC Radio and Sky Arts on the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Human Creativity. He was special consultant to Sky Arts for the programme “The Computer says Show” broadcast in 2016, and the West End Musical “Beyond the Fence” which adopted a range of the latest AI technology (2016). He is a critically acclaimed jazz musician (including BBC TV, BBC Radio, Guardian, Observer) and leader of various bands and music groups in the last forty years.
