Research
Research has spanned a wide range of topics in nuclear structure physics and includes work and publications in different mass regions of the Periodic Tables and a variety of techniques. Experimental methods used include fusion-evaporation reactions induced by heavy ions, radioactive decays, Coulomb excitations, transfer reactions, neutron capture reactions, and radioactive beam experiments. A large variety of techniques in gamma-ray spectroscopy were used to measure properties of nuclear levels: excitation energies, spin, parities, lifetimes and g-factors. The work was performed mainly at Tandem Van de Graaf accelerators in Bucharest, Cologne (Germany) and Yale and the High Flux Beam Reactors at Brookhaven National Laboratory (New York) and Institute Leue Langevin Grenoble (France). The research studies were performed also at the new radioactive beam facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and TRIUMF Laboratory Vancouver (Canada).
Complementary theoretical work includes studies and calculations in the shell model and Nilsson model, collective model, Interacting Boson Model and Interacting Boson and Fermion Model. Different aspects of nuclear structure were studied: single-particle and collective excitations, quadrupole, octupole and hexadecapole degrees of freedom, symmetries and supersymmetries in nuclei, the role of proton-neutron interaction on nuclear structure. A special research direction was centered on efforts to provide a unified, broad scale interpretation of nuclear structure and its evolution with nucleon number.
One of the most important results concerns the study of the phase/shape transition and coexistence in nuclear structure, studies which triggered a large interest worldwide (more than 300 articles published in the last 10 years).
The results were published in over 200 articles (18 in Phys. Rev. Lett., 22 in Phys. Lett., 115 in Phys. Rev. C, etc) with more than 3500 citations and in over 100 invited lectures and contributions at International Conferences (Hirsch factor 32).
