Liangzhong Yao - Biography#

Liangzhong Yao is the Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering & Automation, and Dean (Director) of Smart Grid Research Institute at Wuhan University. He is the Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of IET, Fellow of AAIS, Fellow of AIIA, Chartered Engineer of UK, Convenor of IEC TC8 JWG10 for TS 62786 Series Standards“Distributed energy resources connection with the grid”(2017-), Member of IEC TC8 JWG 12 (2020-), Chair of AC-DC Hybrid Distribution and Consumption Professional Committee of China Electrotechnical Society (2021-), Vice Chair of Electric Power Professional Committee of China Energy Society (2022-), Member of CIGRE WG B4.87 Working Group (2020 -), and Member of CIGRE B4 Working Group “DC System and Power Electronics”Chinese Committee (2020 -). He was also the Chair of IEC TC122 “UHV AC Transmission Systems”(2014-2020), Secretary of IEC SC 8A “Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Generation”(2013-2014), and Convenor of IEC TC8 TS 62786 (2012-2017).

During his past 30 years work experience at Wuhan University (2018 - present), CEPRI (2012 - 2018), SGEPRI (2011 - 2012), Alstom Grid (2004-2011), ABB (1999-2004), University of Manchester(1995 - 1999) in the UK and China, he has conducted various R&D projects in the fields of renewable energy grid integration and control, energy storage, HVDC and DC grids, etc, with a total project value of GBP 20+ millions in the UK and RMB 100+ millions in China. His research results have been applied to practical wind farms and HVDC grid projects in the UK and China, and has received 10+ Science and Technology Innovation awards, as well as IEC Standard award from IET, IEC, China Electricity Council, China Electrotechnical Society, SGCC, CEPRI, Hubei Provincial Government, Beijing and Shanghai Municipal Governments.

He has published 400+ journal and conference papers at prestigious journals and prominent conferences, such as IEEE, IET, CIGRE, has published 80+ patents filed by WIPO, and authored/co-authored 5 books.

He has served as an Associated Editor-in-Chief for International Journals “CSEE Journal of Power Energy & Systems” and "IET Journal of High Voltage", and an editorial member of 8 SCI/EI indexed English/Chinese journals.

He supervised and graduated 14 PhD students, and currently is supervising 10 PhD and 10 Master students at Wuhan University.
