Antonia Trichopoulou - Biography#
Antonia Trichopoulou, MD, PhD, President of the Hellenic Health Foundation, Full Member of the Academy of Athens, Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens School of Medicine. For over twenty years she was Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre of Nutrition at the University of Athens Medical School and the Athens School of Public Health, Greece. Her scientific work focuses on public health and nutritional epidemiology, emphasizing health effects of the Mediterranean diet and traditional foods. She collaborates with Greek, European and international organisations and individuals to generate and disseminate sound health-related knowledge to promote health and prevent disease. She has served as President of the Federation of the European Nutrition Societies and as Chairperson or key member of numerous Greek, European Commission and WHO Committees. An established scientist and educator, she leads and collaborates in research, with a comprehensive list of 75 Research Projects, funded mainly by the European Union. Through this research she has collaborated with 221 research centres, universities and private institutions in 42 countries. She has published 107 peer reviewed papers in Greek and 967 foreign language works, and authored or has publishing responsibility, solely or in collaboration, of 32 Greek and foreign language books -monographs-chapters in books and supplements of reputable scientific journals. She is on the Editorial Board of 14, and a reviewer for over 50, scientific journals. In 2011, she received the Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS) Award for her “outstanding nutritionist career”. Named in Thomson Reuters 2014 “World's Most influential Scientific Minds” List and awarded as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics in 2018 and 2021, she is recognized in Greece and abroad, culminating in being decorated with the Golden Cross of Honour for work in preventative medicine and nutrition by the President of the Greek Republic.
