Martin Stokhof - Biography#


Stokhof has taught at the University of Amsterdam since 1976 and has been a full professor in the department of philosophy there from 1998 to 2016. He has published over one hundred papers on semantics, logic, philosophy of language and Wittgenstein. He has supervised 27 PhD students and 140 Master's students. He was one of the founders of the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation in Amsterdam in 1991, and was its scientific director from 1998 to 2004. He has played major administrative roles in the Netherlands (e.g., as chair of the Humanities division of NWO) as well as in the wider research area in Europe (ESF, HERA). From 2014 to 2019 he member of the Scientific Council of the ERC since 2014, serving from 2017 to 2019 as vice-president of the ERC and domain co-ordinator for the Social Sciences and Humanities.
