- He has published 220 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals. He has an h-index of 81, and Citations of 20,314 (Google Scholar, 2018).
- He has published three books “Geology and Tectonics of the Karakoram Mountains” 1991 with a new “Geological Map of the Central Karakoram” in the back (John Wiley & Sons, Chichester), and “Colliding Continents: a geological exploration of the Himalaya, Karakoram and Tibet” (2013, reprinted in 2017; Oxford University Press), and "Geology of the Oman Mountains, Eastern Arabia" (Springer), 478p..
- He has published a “Geological Map of North Pakistan” (1996) and “Geological Map of the Mount Everest region, Nepal – South Tibet Himalaya” (2003). A second edition, including Makalu and the Kangshung valley was published in 2007.
- He has co-edited 6 books, all Special Publications of the Geological Society of London: volumes 49, Geology and Tectonics of the Oman Region (1990); 74, Himalayan Tectonics (1993); 170, Tectonics of the Nanga Parbat Syntaxis and Western Himalaya (2000); 268 Channel Flow, Ductile Extrusion and Exhumation in Continental Collision zones (2006); 392 Tectonics of Oman (2014), and 483 Himalayan Tectonics: A Modern Synthesis.

- He was the Louis Murray Visiting Fellow at the University of Cape Town for 3 months (January-March 2003) visiting diamond mines in Zimbabwe and South Africa, funded by DeBeers.
- He has attracted research funding for work in Oman, Syria and Pakistan from the following oil and gas companies:- Shell, Amoco, BP, Marathon, BHP, Hunt Oil, Maurel et Prom and ADNOC. He has attracted continuous funding from NERC (UK) from 1985 to 2010 and raised over £ 2 million grant money for his research.
