Then, moved to Brest (France) in a telecommunications engineer school, where he created and managed the "computer science and engineering" department. In 1984: moved back to the university of Rennes where, since then, he been a professor in computer science. At IRISA (CNRS-INRIA-Univ. lab), he founded a research group on Distributed Algorithms in 1984 (one of the very first groups on this topic in Europe). His research interests: distributed algorithms, distr. computing systems, distr. computability and dependability. His main interest: fundamental principles that underlie distributed computing systems. Principal Investigator of many research grants (founded by EC, private companies, or French government). He obtained grants from binational programmes between France and Brazil, Hong-Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, and USA ). Invited by more than 30 universities all over the world to give lectures on distributed computing.

He has also written 11 books (MIT Press, Wiley, Springer). Invited speaker in 28 int'l conferences (including DISC, SIROCCO, EUROPAR, ICDCN, IEEE NCA, and OPODIS). His (Google Scholar) h-index is 49. PC member in more than 180 conferences . As chair/member: served in steering committees of prestigious conf. (such as ACM PODC, DISC, IEEE ICDCS). Since 2006: European representative in the IEEE TC on Distributed Computing. Since 2010: senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, and 2015 recipient of the Prize for innovation in distributed computing.
