Bart Preneel - Biography#

Bart Preneel received the Electrical Engineering degree and the Doctorate in Applied Sciences in 1987 and 1993 respectively, both from the University of Leuven (Belgium). From 1987 to 2000 he was research assistant, postdoctoral researcher, and research associate of the FWO (Fund for Scientific Research, Flanders, Belgium).

Since 1997 he also holds a professor position at the KU Leuven, from 2006 as full professor (“gewoon hoogleraar”).

He has been visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark, TU Graz in Austria, University of Bergen in Norway, Ruhr-Universität in Bochum (Germany) and at the University of Ghent. He has been a scientific advisor of Philips Research (the Netherlands) (2005-2011). During the academic year 1993-1994, he was a research fellow of the EECS Department of the University of California at Berkeley.

Bart Preneel is a winner of the European Information Security Award 2003 for Academic Research. Prize of the European Commission awarded by an internal jury for the success of the EU NESSIE Project (http://www.cryptonessie.org), which has had a substantial impact on research and standardization in the area of cryptographic algorithms.

He is also Honorary Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) designation by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). With more than 28,000 members in more than 100 countries, the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) (http://www.isaca.org) is a recognized global leader in IT governance, control, security and assurance. Six individuals worldwide have received this award in 2003.

Bart Preneel is heading the research group COSIC, which has about 60 members. This research group is since 2004 member of iMinds, a Flemish research ICT research institute. Forty five PhD students have graduated under his supervision. He is president of the IACR (International Association for Cryptologic Research) and he is co-founder and president of L-SEC vzw. (Leuven Security Excellence Consortium), an association of 60 companies and research institutions in the area of e-security. He also serves a member of the Permanent Stakeholders Group (PSG) of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). In 2013 he has chaired the PE6 starting grant panel of the ERC (European Research Council). He also served on the editorial board of several prestigious journals, as member of research review boards in seven countries and in the advisory boards of three companies.

Bart Preneel served as program chair of 16 international conferences and workshops. He has been a member of the program committee for more than 200 international conferences (including 50 IACR conferences and workshops), and has been invited speaker at 80 international conferences in more than 30 countries. He has lectured at 50 international Summer schools in more than 30 countries. Bart Preneel has participated to more than 30 international research projects sponsored by the European Commission; he has been Project Manager of five EU projects including the Networks of Excellence ECRYPT and ECRYPT II

As a consultant, he has been involved in a large number of security studies a.o. for the financial and telecommunications sector and for the Belgian government. He has also testified as an expert before the Belgian and European Parliament and the Belgian courts. He has also been involved in standardization initiatives in IEEE, ISO/TC68 (Banking), IETF, and EESSI (Electronic Signatures), frequently as editor.
