Arnaldo Marcone - Biography#
Arnaldo Marcone studied at the University of Pisa, where he graduated in Ancient History, and at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (1977). He took his doctorate at the Scuola Normale Superiore (1977-1981), where he was also a research fellow. He then held a Humboldt Fellowship in Cologne from 1986 to 1987 and in subsequent periods, and spent a term in Cambridge (1993) with a grant from the CNR. He was a research fellow at the University of Florence, where he taught History of Ancient Political Thought from November 1997 until October 2000.
From 1992 to 2001 he was an associate professor at the University of Parma, where he taught Economic and Social History of the Ancient World. From 2001 to 2008 he was extraordinary professor and then full professor of Roman History at the University of Udine, where he served as Head of the Department of History and Protection of Cultural Heritage from 2003 to 2008. From 2008 to 2024 he was full professor of Roman History at the University of Roma Tre.
His research interests have mainly focused on four areas: 1) Late Antiquity; 2) economic and social history; 3) the history of political thought; 4) the history of modern historiography on the ancient world, with special emphasis on the work of M. Rostovtzeff.
He has been the Editor of the Rivista Storica Italiana since 2022, and serves on the advisory boards of a number of academic journals. In 2004 he established the series ‘Studi Udinesi sul Mondo Antico’ (Le Monnier/Florence), renamed ‘Studi sul Mondo Antico’ in 2009, which he edits.
Since 2018 he has been President of the Centro Studi Sallustiani in L'Aquila.
