Matthijs Kalmijn - Biography#
Kalmijn received a Bachelor in Sociology in the Netherlands (1987) and went on for a PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles (1991). Since returning in the Netherlands, Kalmijn has specialized in reseach on family, life course, and stratification. He has initiated and co-organized several large-scale surveys, e.g., Households in the Netherlands (HIN), Divorce in the Netherlands (SIN), Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (NKPS). These projects used innovative research designs and led to numerous publications, not only by the team but also by others (the surveys were made available in the public domain). He supervised 13 PhD students and 6 Postdocs. He has had several managerial responsibilities at the departments where he worked (chair, reseach director) and was inaugurated to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in April 2007. He received an ERC Advanced Grant in 2015 and is now coordinating a research team together with Statistics Netherlands in doing a large new survey on complex family histories.
