Guy Joos - Biography#

Professor Guy Joos was born in Ostend, Belgium (17.01.1956). He attended the Ghent University where he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1980, magna cum laude. After graduating he was trained in Internal Medicine and in Pulmonary Medicine at the Ghent University Hospital. He was Board certified in Internal Medicine in 1985 and in Pulmonary Medicine in 1990. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1988, with a thesis entitled “The role of neuropeptides in the pathogenesis of asthma” (promoters: Prof Dr M Van Der Straeten and Prof Dr R Pauwels).

He is Full Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the Ghent University (since 1999), Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Ghent University Hospital (since 2004), Chair of the Dept Internal Medicine (2014- 2018) and is Director of Research (Vice-Dean) (since october 2017) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health sciences, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium.

The main research interest of Prof Joos is translational and clinical research in asthma and COPD. His research is performed in the Translational Lab for Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. Prof Joos is author or co-author of more than 250 articles, of which more than 200 articles have been published in peer-reviewed international journals. His h-index is 53. Since 1998 he was promoter of 16 PhD theses in the field of translational research in asthma and COPD. He has lectured both at national and international meetings on preclinical and clinical aspects of asthma and COPD.

Prof Joos has been Associate Editor and member of the Editorial Board of the Biomed Central Journal “Respiratory Research”, (2005 – 2015), Member of the Editorial Board of "American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine" (2006-2009), and - Associate Editor of the Editorial Board, "Therapeutic Advances in Respiratory disease" (2007- 2011).

Professor Joos has been president of the Belgian Thoracic Society from 2010-2012. He is an active member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) since 1990. He was Head of the group (5.2) “Airway regulation and provocation” within the Assembly Allergy and Clinical Immunology of the ERS, Chair of the ERS Task Force on Indirect Challenges (published in 2003), Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee of Assembly 5 (2003 to 2007), Secretary of the ERS Assembly Airway Diseases (2008-2010) and ERS Treasurer (2010-2013). He served as President of ERS from September 2016 to September 2017.
