Hans Joas is one of a handful of leading scholars world-wide in sociological
theory, equally familiar with classical European philosophy and American
pragmatism. He has provided an original theory of action and of the emergence
of values but also made path-breaking contributions to the sociology of
religion, of war and of human rights.
He has been teaching at preeminent institutions on both sides of the
Atlantic and held leading positions in academies and professional associations.
