Tong Jiang - Biography#
The candidate studied at the Department of Geography of the Peking University, China (1980-1984), receiving a B.Sc. degree. Then, he studied in the Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology & Geocryology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1984 - 1987), receiving a M.Sc. degree. From 1987 to 2008 he was Professor and Assistant Director in the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2008 to 2018 he was Professor and Chief Scientist in the National Climate Centre, China Meteorological Administration. From 2018 to 2022 he was Professor and Dean of School of Geographical Science, Director of the Institute of Disaster Risk Management, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. At present, he is Executive Director for the Jiangsu Provincial Research Institute of Climatic and Environmental Governance, China.
His scientific career includes long-term visits to Europe. In 1991, he overtook a 6-month project work under support of the Volkswagen Foundation at the Institute of Geography, Justus-Liebig University in Giessen, Germany. This was the first stage in his cooperation with European universities and research institutes that has lasted more than 30 years and continued until recently. From 1994 to 1999 he worked for his (German) Dr. rer. nat. degree at the Justus-Liebig University, Giessen, Germany. In 1999-2001 he was a post-doc at the CNRS Lab. MTG, Rouen University, France.
He has led a series of projects, such as "Managing risk for water scarcity: integration of climate and socioeconomic scenarios" (2018-2023) funded by German Research Foundation (DFG) and National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), "Sustainable development at oasis in the Tarim River Basin" (2012 - 2017) funded by German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), "Weather index insurance in China" (2010 - 2012) funded by German Environment Ministry, and "Chinese-German Cooperation Group for climate change and floods/droughts" (2007 - 2017) funded by DFG and NSFC. Three consecutive projects on climate services for water research, human health and climate change adaptation (2018 - 2020) were funded by Met Office and Newton Foundation. The project "Land-atmosphere interaction and its contribution to intense monsoon precipitation over East Asia" (2012 - 2015) was funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology in the Netherlands. Under the support of aforementioned projects, he supervised more than 40 M.Sc.'s and 20 Ph.D.'s.
His rich publication track includes 281 peer reviewed papers, 18 books and 11 book chapters on the science of climate change and climate change impacts. Some of them were rated as the highly-cited papers and some were rated as the Key Publications of the State Publishing Administration. He was authorized 12 invention and utility patents, and software copyrights in the realm of assessments of weather extremes and risk-based early warnings.
