Baron André Jaumotte - Biography#
Professor André Jaumotte is a mechanical and electrical engineer.
He is Emeritus Professor of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He ran the Institute of Applied Mechanics from 1958 to 1986 and the Institute of Aeronautics from 1984 - 2004 (NATO).
He was elected Rector and President of the Board of the Université Libre de Bruxelles between 1968 and 1981 and, subsequently, President of the Management Board of the Hôpital Erasme, the University Hospital of the ULB until 1988.
The scientific activity of Professor Jaumotte is geared towards thermodynamics and internal aerodynamics of turbo-machines, fields in which he produced numerous contributions in recognition of which he was elected member of the Royal Academy of Belgium, of the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences, of the "Académie des Sciences" in Paris, the European Academy and of other foreign and international academies. In the industrial world, he was appointed for several missions of expertise in Belgium and abroad, notably in Iraq and Sweden and in various African countries. As far as national and international standardization is concerned, he participated in or chaired working groups on mass flow measurements based on the use of apparatuses producing a pressure reduction, positined at the extremity of a pipe; on mass flow measurements at pipe intake by the Borda method using a single pressure tap; on the reduction or required pipe length upstream and downstream of pressure-based flow meters, in situ testing of fans and rules for gas-turbines testing.
He was awarded Honorary Doctorates from the Vrije Universteit Brussel, from Laval University in Quebec, from the Technical University of Cluj, and of Bucarest (Romania) and was rewarded by numerous scientific prizes. He chaired the Evaluatin Commission in elctro-nuclear matters established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs which inspired the energy policy of Belgium (1971). He was the representative of public shareholders at Belgonucléaire (MOX combustible) until 1992 and was the chairman of the Board of AVN (safety control in nuclear matter) until 2002. He is now honorary member of the board of AVN and SCK/CEN (Nuclear Study Center).
He is the author of numerous monographs and articles. Amongst his works, "La Propulsion des Fusées" and "Choc et Ondes de Chocs" in collaboration with French colleagues deserve to be mentioned. The former was translated into English, German and Russian. In addition he also wrote "La Science au Service du Pays" in 1985, a report for the King Baudouin Foundation.
His course on Turbo-machines (6 volumes) is still a reference in the field.
He is one of the three authors of "Un demi siècle de nucléaire en Belgique" (1994) and of the consistent work "Histoire du nucléaire en Belgique 1990-2005" (2008), in collaboration with M.Maris and P. Govaerts.
On the international scene, he was the President of the French-speaking Universities Organization (Montreal, Paris) from 1981 to 1984 and is a former member of the Board (and Vice-President) of the United Nations University in Tokio (1981 to 1987).
He holds various distinguished Belgian and foreign awards.
He was awarded the title of Baron by the King of Belgium in 1989.
Today, he is the President of several Foundations which are active in research; he is also an active member and the Vice-President of the National Biography within the Royal Academy of Belgium and a member of the Jury of the Roverval Prize in France, related to technology in the media.
