Manuel Herrero is Full Professor of Early Modern History at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville. He received his PhD from the European University Institute in Florence in 1998 and taught as a research fellow at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), the Istituto Benedetto Croce of Naples, the Center for the History of European Expansion (IGEER) in Leiden University, Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, Liège University and at the Institute of History (CSIC) in Madrid. Visiting Scholar in 2016 at the Department of History in Harvard University; Senior Research Fellow at the Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte (IEG) in Mainz, Germany and Visiting Scholar in 2017 in École Normale Supérieure de Lyon.

His research focuses on the comparative approach to the history of the mercantile republics of the Netherlands and Genoa, and on the complex constitution of the Hispanic Monarchy, Europe’s first transnational, polycentric and global empire. Other areas of research include Atlantic History and models of European expansion.
