D.Phil. within Modern History Faculty at New College, Oxford University 1981-1986; doctoral thesis title 'The Goths and the Balkans AD 350-500'.

  • 1986 - 1987 Cadet Economist with H.M. Treasury
  • 1987 - 1991 Murray Research Fellow in History at Worcester College, Oxford. This is a 5 year postdoctoral award appointed a committee including the senior History professors of Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Trinity College Dublin
  • 1991 - 1997 Lecturer (temporary, then A, then B ) in Early Medieval History at University College London
  • 1997 - 2002 Reader in Early Medieval History at UCL
