Iryna Gurevych - Biography#
Iryna Gurevych is a Full Professor at the Computer Science Department of the Technical University Darmstadt, Germany and head of the UKP Lab. She has a strong background in information extraction, semantic text processing, machine learning and innovative applications of NLP to social sciences and humanities. Her recognition is evidenced by her being the winner of the Royal Society Milner Award and Lecture 2025, a Member of the Leopoldina, German National Academy of Science, winner of an ERC Advanced Grant for the project “InterText – Modeling Text as a Living Object in a Cross-Document Context”, and elected member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), the First Recipient of the “Spitzen Professur” by LOEWE in Hesse, Germany. Other activities include being Past-President of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). Co-Director of the European Laboratories for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) NLP program involving the top European academics in Machine Learning, the Founder and Co-Director of the Centre for the Digital Foundation of Research in the Humanities, Social, and Educational Sciences (CEDIFOR), An ELLIS Fellow since 2020, she was awarded ACL Fellow 2020 for her outstanding work in natural language processing and machine learning. Other awards include the Lichtenberg-Professorship Career Award and the Emmy-Noether Career Award (both in 2007).
