Terrence Daintith - Curriculum vitae#

Professor Daintith was born in May 1942 in Couldson, Surrey and educated at Wimbledon College, London, and then at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he took first class honours in the Oxford University Honours School of Jurisprudence in 1963.

From 1963-1964, he was Associate in Law at University of California Law School Berkeley, followed by eight years as a lecturer in Constitutional Law at the University of Edinburgh. He was from 1968-1969 Levenhulme European scholar at the University of Nancy in France. He was called to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1966 and elected a Bencher in 2000. He received an honorary LLD from de Montfort University in 2001.

At the University of Dundee, he held the Chair of Public Law from 1972-1983 and in 1977 founded the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy. From 1981-1987, he was Professor of Law at the European University Institute, Florence. He has held visiting appointments at the College of Europe in Bruges and at the Universities of Aix-Marseilles, Sydney, Trento, Orleans, and Rome, at Bucerius Law School, Hamburg, and (currently) at the Universities of Melbourne and Western Australia.

Elected to the Academia Europaea in 1989, his activity in international bodies included chairing the Research Support Scheme and then the Central Asian Research Initiative of the Open Society Foundation (1992-2003). At home, he was on the Law Advisory Committee of the British Council; in 1994-95, he chaired the group that produced a radical revision of the Law Library Standards maintained by the Society of Public Teachers of Law.
