Alberto Corsín Jiménez - Biography#


Alberto Corsín Jiménez is a Senior Scientist (Investigador Científico) in the Department of Social Anthropology at the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid. He studied Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford (DPhil 2001) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (MSc 1996).

Corsín's work lies at the intersection between anthropology and social studies of science and technology (STS). He has an interest in the history and ethnography of scientific and technological designs, where he has been particularly drawn to the study of prototypes and interfaces, understood as technical and design systems between nature and culture. More recently he has studied how social movements build infrastructures of habitation and autonomy within and against regimes of urban governmentality.

As of January 2022, he became co-editor of Cultural Anthropology, one of the leading journals in the field of anthropology. He has been an Invited Seminarian at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe (2018), Invited Keynote at the Danish Association for Science and Technology Studies Annual Conference (2018), and was the David Schneider Keynote Lecturer at the Society of Cultural Anthropology Biannual Meeting (2016) and Mellon Foundation John E. Sawyer Seminarian at the University of California, Davis (2013).

Starting October 2021 Corsín Jiménez became Head of the Department of Social Anthropology at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Between 2013-2019 he was Secretary of the European Association of Social Anthropologists. Between 2010-2013 he was the Head of the Social Sciences Board at the Spanish National Agency for Research Evaluation. Between 2009-2010 he was Dean of Spain's School for Industrial Organisation.

In 2013 he was a peer-reviewer for the Holberg Prize and in 2011 and 2012 he was a member of the Scientific Panel for Anthropology at the Danish Council for Independent Research.

Corsín Jiménez has been external assessor for appointment committees at Harvard University (2019), the University of California, Berkeley (2014) and the University of Barcelona (2017), and has sat onthe examining boards of graduate and postgraduate programs and PhD vivas at the University of Oxford, University of Manchester, University of Cambridge, University of London, Aarhus University or the University of Barcelona.
