Zongwei Cai - Biography#

Prof. Cai received a BSc degree in 1982 from Xiamen University, China and Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry in 1990 from Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany. He did post-doc research in 1991-93 and became Research Assistant Professor from 1994-96 in University of Nebraska, USA. Since 2001, he has worked as Associate Professor to Chair Professor in Department of Chemistry, Hong Kong Baptist University. Currently, he is an Endowed Chair Professor of Chemistry and Director of State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis.

Prof. Cai’s research interests focuses on Environmental Analytical Chemistry. He is one of the pioneers of using mass spectrometry for trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). He has made a series of internationally influential innovations in development of new methods for identification of emerging POPs, which is related with human health problems. This leads to his significant contributions to environmental safety in China and other Asian countries. As an internationally recognized expert in POPs research, he was appointed by United Nation Environmental Programs (UNEP) to work with experts from Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and provide training for over 50 young scientists from Asian in 2010. He has been invited by UNEP Global POPs Monitoring Program as “Principal Author” to complete all of three Asian-Pacific reports on POPs under Stockholm Convention.

Prof. Cai has published over 650 papers, with 17,256 citations and H-index of 68 (Web of Science) and received 38 peer-reviewed research grants as PIs. Importantly, he has wide collaborations with scientists from Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Spain and USA. He was elected as Chairman for “Symposium on Developments and Challenges in Implementation of Stockholm Convention” in 2012, and co-chairman for “International Symposium on Halogenated POPs (Dioxin2021) in 2021. He has served on international grant review panels including “The European Science Foundation”; “National Science Center Poland”; “UK Research and Innovation” and “Swiss National Science Foundation”. He is currently co-Editor in Chief of Environmental Science: Advances (RSC), Editor of Rapid Comm. Mass Spec (Wiley) and Associated Editor of Environmental Chemistry.
