Jean-Pierre Bourguignon#

Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, born 1947, is currently the Directeur de Recherche at CNRS and Director of the “Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques” (IHÉS) in Bures-sur-Yvette, near Paris. He is, in addition, Professor of mathematics at the École Polytechnique.

After graduating from the École Polytechnique, he obtained a Ph.D in mathematics from the University Paris VII in 1974 under the supervision of Marcel Berger. A member of the scientific council of several institutes, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon is also editor of a number of mathematical journals.

Professor Bourguignon is the mathematical author or co-author of the videos Tambour, que dis-tu?, which was awarded a prize at the Palaiseau International Science Film Festival in 1987, and The New Shepherd's Lamp.

1987 he was awarded the Prix Paul Langevin de l'Académie des Sciences de Paris and in 1997 he received the Prix du rayonnement français pour les sciences mathématiques et physiques.

He was president of the Société Mathématique de France in 1990-1992 and of the European Mathematical Society from 1995 to 1998. He has received several prizes, and is currently the secretary of the mathematics section of the Academia Europaea, a foreign member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and an honorary member of the London Mathematical Society. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon is one of the founding members of Euroscience and has been a member of its Governing Board from 2002 to 2006.
