Anatole Abragam - Curriculum Vitae#

Born: December 15, 1914

Anatole Abragam was born in Russia and emigrated with his family to France in 1925. He was educated at the University of Paris (1933-1936) and served in the Second World War. After the war, he continued his studies at the École Supérieure d'Électricité and from 1947-1950 he studied at University of Oxford. He obtained his Ph.D. from Oxford University in 1950 under the supervision of Maurice Pryce.

He joined the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique in 1946, founded a magnetic resonance laboratory, and was the Directeur de la Physique from 1965 to 1971. From 1960 to 1985 he was professor of nuclear magnetism at the College de France.

Anatole Abragam was elected a member of the Académie des sciences in 1973. Among his awards, he won the 13th Lorentz medal in 1982 for his contributions to both nuclear magnetic resonance and the electron paramagnetic resonance. He is an Honorary Fellow of both Merton and Jesus Colleges, Oxford.
