Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Quantum Interference in Single Molecule Devices (2 posts)#
Department of Materials, Parks Road, Oxford#
Grade 7: Salary in the range £31,604 – £35,550 p.a.Job details
Two postdoctoral research appointments in the fabrication and investigation of molecular quantum devices are available immediately, each for a fixed-term up to 31 December 2021. The posts will be under the supervision of Professor Andrew Briggs and his colleagues. The persons appointed will fabricate and test single-molecule electronic devices connected across graphene nanogaps, with a view to measuring and harnessing quantum interference.
A breakthrough in the development of single-molecule transistors has come with the design and synthesis of molecules for quantum control. There is now an urgent need to understand the electronic behaviour of these devices in greater detail, particularly: (i) in devices fabricated from larger molecules (5–20 nm) or nanoribbons; (ii) in devices which show strong coupling to molecular vibrations or in which the charge transport is sensitive to optical excitation. These full-time posts offer an excellent opportunity to make progress towards emerging quantum technologies through fundamental scientific discovery.
By the start date applicants must have completed a doctorate in a relevant physical science and have an outstanding track record of research and publications, commensurate with stage in career. Applicants will have research experience in investigating charge transport through nanodevices. Experience of low temperature charge-transport experiments is desirable. Willingness and ability to engage with others in collaborative research is essential for this post.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on 18 January 2018.
