Jan Willem Klop

Jan Willem Klop (1945-2025)#

We regret to announce that Emeritus Professor of Applied Logic Jan Willem Klop (b. 1945), a Member of Academia Europaea since 2011 and a former professor at the Free University of Amsterdam (VU), recently passed away. A distinguished member of the world-wide computer science community, he received his PhD on "Combinatory Reduction Systems" under Profs. Dirk van Dalen and Henk Barendregt MAE (1980) at the University of Utrecht, and was also associated with the Mathematical Centre in Amsterdam (CWI) since 1980. From 1986 until his retirement he was part-time Professor at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam, and from 1998 until 2007 also part-time Professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen. From 1998 to 2004, he served as Chair of the Dutch Association for Theoretical Computer Science (NVTI). From 2002 to 2004 he was Head of the Department of Computer Science at the VU. In 2002 he received an honorary doctorate at the University of East Anglia, England. Elected Fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW), section Mathematics, in 2003, he was also a Fellow of CWI Amsterdam since 2006. He is survived by his spouse Marianne Leicher and their daughter Maartje.
