Fraud alert: Phishing emails impersonating the Academy President#
The office of Academia Europaea has been made aware of fraudulent emails being sent to Members of our Academy. These emails falsely claim to be from the President of the Academy and request money or financial assistance. If you receive any suspicious messages:
- Do not respond.
- Do not click on any links or open attachments.
- Report the message to Dana Kaiser dkaiser@iicm.tugraz.at
The sender of one of the mails was: boardpresident2205@gmail.com - this is a fake mail address which has nothing to do with the Academy.
Examples of the fraudulent mails:
Dear Ulrich,
I trust you are doing well.
I regret to trouble you, but I am currently facing a pressing issue and would sincerely appreciate your help. I need to process a transfer of €2,800 for the logistics and welfare support of AE delegates as a matter of urgency. Our treasurer is on vacation and unable to manage the payment at this time. Furthermore, I am away and lack access to my internet banking card reader, which is required to complete the transfer.
Would you be able to assist AE by executing this transaction? If you are willing, I can provide you with the recipient's bank information. I will ensure that you are reimbursed promptly upon my return, and I will reconcile all details with the treasurer when he gets back.
Please let me know if you can help, and I will forward the necessary details to you.
