Academia Europaea launches new Regional Knowledge Hub in Bucharest#


Academia Europaea is pleased to announce the launch of a new Regional Knowledge Hub in Bucharest, hosted by the Romanian Academy. The Bucharest Hub joins a distinguished group of Academia Europaea regional centres in Barcelona, Bergen, Budapest, Cardiff, Tbilisi, and Wroclaw, as well as offices in Graz, London, and Munich.

The Bucharest Hub will play a central role in supporting the mission of Academia Europaea by facilitating scholarly dialogue across the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, and technology. It will promote high-level research, provide expert advice on scientific and scholarly issues, and contribute to public engagement and education in line with the values of both Academia Europaea and the Romanian Academy.

Professor Mircea Dumitru MAE has been appointed Academic Director of the new Hub. A philosopher of international standing, Professor Dumitru is Vice-President of the Romanian Academy and has been a member of Academia Europaea since 2019. He brings to the role a wealth of academic and leadership experience, having previously served as Rector of the University of Bucharest and as Romania’s Minister of Education and Scientific Research.

The establishment of the Bucharest Hub was proposed by Sorin Antohi MAE (who will serve as hub Executive Director), the President of the Romanian Academy, Professor Ioan-Aurel Pop MAE, and Vice-President Professor Marius Andruh MAE - both members of Academia Europaea. The Hub’s core team also includes Grigore Vida (Hub Manager), Luminița Gliga (Hub Officer), and Daniel Cățoi (Webmaster).

The foundations of the Bucharest Hub were laid with the signing of a formal cooperation agreement between Academia Europaea and the Romanian Academy on 9th May 2025. The Hub’s official website, provides information about the team, activities, and office location, with further updates to follow as the Hub continues to expand and activate its networks. Looking ahead, the Hub is planning to host its first major event, the AE Bucharest Hub Days, from 8-10 May 2026. During this occasion, the prestigious Cantemir Medal and the Ioan Petru Culianu Prize will be announced. Additionally, the Hub is preparing to host the Academia Europaea Annual Conference in 2027, further cementing its role as a key platform for interdisciplinary collaboration in the region.
