Laurenz Lütteken - Biography#

Laurenz Lütteken is Professor and Chair of Musicology at the University of Zurich.

He studied musicology, German language and literature, and history of arts at the universities of Münster and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in musicology in 1991 based on a thesis on Guillaume Dufay.

He received study grants from the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rome, the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and worked as a freelance journalist. During his time as research assistant at the Institute for Musicology at the University of Münster from 1992 to 1995, Laurenz Lütteken finalized his habilitation and received the Venia Legendi in1995. Starting in 1995 he was acting director of the Institute for Musicology at the University of Heidelberg, afterwards as substitute professor at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, before being appointed full professor at the University of Marburg in 1996. In 2001 accepted the offer to become chair of musicology at the University of Zurich.

Laurenz Lütteken published extensively on the music of the 14th – 21st centuries with a focus on the music of the Renaissance, the 18th century (especially Mozart) and Strauss. He is editor in chief of the encyclopedia ‘MGG Online’. Among his numerous awards the Heisenberg Scholarship (1997), the Dent Medal of the Royal Musical Association (2002), and the election into the Academia Europaea (2008), the prize ‘Geisteswissenschaften International’ (2017) are particularly noteworthy. In 2009 he was visiting professor at the Université François Rabelais Tours - Centre d'Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance, in 2013/14 he was Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin.

Among others, he was chair of the panel musicology of the ERIH (2008-2012), president of ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Erforschung des 18. Jahrhunderts’ (2004-2010), president of ‘Musikgeschichtliche Kommission’ (2002-2012) and is actually president of the board of IZEA at the University of Halle (since 2017) and president of the Lyra Foundation (since 2016).
