Marta Estrada - Biography#


Marta Estrada holds degrees in Biology (1968) and in Medicine and Surgery (1970) from the University of Barcelona, and a Ph. D. degree in Biology (1976) from the same university.

Estrada has long experience in biological oceanography. Her career has focused on marine phytoplankton ecology and her primary research interests are the diversity and dynamics of phytoplankton communities and the interactions between physical and biological processes in the pelagic ecosystem. Her work has taken her on oceanographic cruises in the Mediterranean and all the major oceans of the world, including the Southern Ocean and the Arctic. Author of over 200 scientific papers. She has been Principal Investigator of a number of projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science and responsible of several partnerships in EU research contracts. Among other positions, Dr. Estrada has been Member-at-large of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (2005-2008) and Director of the ICM (Marine Sciences Institute) between 1995 and 1997.She has served in numerous national and international panels and is currently the Spanish representative for SCOR (Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research).
