- 1938: born at Ludwigshafen am Rhein (Germany)
- 1957-1964: After high school he studied Musicology, German Studies, History, Philosophy and Education at the Universities of Mainz (1957), Kiel (1958 - 1960: at Anna Amalia Abert and Walter Wiora) and since 1961 in Saarbrücken (in Walter Salmen) and since 1963 as a fellow of the Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung
- 1963/64: PhD with a thesis on "Sing-ability, popularity and art song" at the University of Saarbruecken at Walter Salmen, August and Herman Long Krings (summa cum laude and Faculty Award)
- 1964/65:Head of the National Bibliography , the German hymn music history at the Archive in Kassel, Germany
- 1966-1998: As the successor to Carl Dahlhaus, first officer, since 1972 as executive director of the state Department of Ethnography of the Musicology Department at the University of Kiel
- 1972-1984:Project manager at the Sonderforschungsbereich 17 ( Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Research ), Since 1976 the administrative function as a board member
- 1973-1990:At the Music high school Lübeck in charge of education for secondary school music teachers in Schleswig-Holstein, since 1975 Member of the Scientific Examination Office
- 1977:Habilitation in musicology at the University of Kiel
