He is a pioneer and research leader in the field of non-coding RNA in cardiovascular diseases, making significant original contributions with international recognition. For example, he is the first in the world to identify that non-coding RNAs may play key roles in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. His studies on non-coding RNAs have opened up a new research field within cardiovascular diseases. He created the term “microRNomics”, which is now widely used in data analysis of non-coding RNAs in cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Zhang is the first scientist who identified that non-coding RNAs could work as a novel class of hormone-like endocrine molecules. In addition, Dr. Zhang is one of the pioneers who discovered that blood and serum microparticles including non-coding RNAs within them may be important biomarkers for cardiovascular diseases.
